Chapter Eleven

He saw me before I saw him, but then again, being green makes you hard to miss. That I was flanked by a giant man and an angel dressed in neon orange pants and a flashy pink button-up.

“Shay?” Matt said my name like he wasn’t one hundred percent sure it was really me.

Did the green throw you off?” Lee asked.

“Uh … yeah, a little.” Matt stared at me with his eyebrows knit together. “I’m going to go out on a limb and assume Aunt Hattie had something to do with this?”

“That would be a wise assumption,” I said.

“Was it intentional?” he asked. It was a fair question. Aunt Hattie had been known to throw curses around when someone got on her bad side.

“No, actually it wasn’t. Believe it or not she was trying to help. Things just went a little sideways.”

He nodded and sucked in his upper lip.

“Where is Leah?” I asked.

“She’s chasing down some leads.” He was being vague but that was par for the course.

He looked at each of us before letting his gaze settle on me. “And you? What are you up to?”

“Us?” I balked. “We aren’t up to anything.”

He pressed his lips together and cocked an eyebrow. A sure sign that he didn’t believe me.

“It’s not a crime to be in town in the middle of the day,” I said.

“No, it isn’t. I’m just curious why you’re out front of the district attorney’s office. See, I just came from there because that’s a logical place to start investigating. So, it’s a little odd to me to find you here as well.”

“Technically we aren’t here. We’re on the sidewalk and the district attorney’s office just so happens to be nearby.”

“So, tell me then, where are you headed?” He turned to look left and then right. “I don’t see any restaurants, shops, movie theaters … nothing remotely reasonable for you to visit.”

He had me there. “Fine. But you know, it’s also not a crime for me to have a conversation with someone.”

“It is if it impedes my investigation,” he argued.

“I’m not impeding your investigation. I’m helping.”

He tossed his head back and let out a deep laugh.

I uncrossed my arms to swat at him. “Stop it. You know darn well how much I’ve helped in the past. And this time it’s personal.”

His laugh stopped abruptly and his expression turned grim. “It is for me too, Shay. That’s why I’m doing everything in my power to find out who killed Ted Fox. I know Kiki didn’t do it. But it doesn’t matter what I know. What matters is what I can prove.”

“Then we have to find proof that someone else killed him,” I said.

“What do you think I’m trying to do?” He pinched the bridge of his nose.

Lee was giving me a look. A look that meant I needed to ease up on my brother. As much as I hated to admit it, he was right.

“Okay,” I threw my arms around Matt’s and squeezed as hard as I could. When I pulled back, he had confusion written all over his face.
